What I'd Say—Ray Charles

  I don't even know how to describe the groove to this song other than that it's intense. When Ray Charles started singing I thought it sounded very familiar to Elvis. Which triggered the realization of why they say Elvis stole the sound of music created by black people. I don't fully understand nor have I researched the situation enough to give an absolute opinion, but from the sound of this song I can definitely see the resemblance between a song like this and Elvis' iconic sound. It was really in the type of rhythm used by Charles that is very reminiscent of Elvis' very catchy rhythm. There's a few sections of the song where there's just a male and female voice saying "uh" and "oh" back and forth to each other with rhythm. I was very intrigued by that because it was something I'd never heard before. It was awesome though. I liked the words to the song also. I feel that it was written specifically to be performed. It must have been.

The Twist—Chubby Checker

I loved the immediate up tempo rhythm that hits as soon as you press play. This song is begging to be danced to. I think this is my favorite song so far this semester. It just feels good. This feels like a song I should have heard before, but I'm fairly certain this was at least the first time I intentionally listened to the song all the way through. I like how this song uses a rest to create a great rhythm especially for dancing. I honestly do not care about the lyrics for this song other than for its most important two words, 'The Twist." However, this is not meant to take away from how great and unique Chubby Checker’s voice is. I think the rhythm and tone of his voice plays an integral part to the song’s groove. The entire time the song played on my first few listens all I could think of was how much it reminded me of the iconic Pulp Fiction dancing scene where they quite literally twist the entire scene.
